An increase in global quotas for physicians and dentists

13 May 2026 | Country Update

The Council of Ministers approved an increase in physician quotas for 2032 and 2033. In the French Community, the quota rises from 950 in 2031 to 1 089 in 2032–2033. In the Flemish Community, it increases from 1 378 in 2031 to 1 427 in 2032–2033. For dentists, quotas for 2031–2036 are set at 158 in the French Community and 266 in the Flemish Community, compared with 108 and 199 respectively before 2030. These quotas are based on the Planning Commission’s opinion, which draws on new workforce projection scenarios. These scenarios take into account lower physician activity rates and higher healthcare consumption. The quotas also reflect the impact of foreign trained physicians and a decline in medical student numbers in the Flemish Community.
